The Paddy Wallace Blog – Great Win Puts Ulster on Course for the Play Offs
Ulster put a great performance in on Saturday and are now looking good for the play offs for the Guinness Pro 12. Wins in all three remaining matches will give the team a home semi final, which is always helpful, and with the final being at the Kingspan, the stars may be lining up.
The team are moving towards the climax of the season showing their best form of the year. Five tries in Galway, a bonus point and third place in the League on points difference is pretty impressive. With both Leinster and Munster at home and finishing away to Glasgow a home semi is certainly in our own hands. Ulster at full strength are a different animal and I think last weekend was the first time Doaky has been able to pick from a full deck. As long as the fitness gods are kind Ulster will be serious contenders for silverware.
I always loved coming back from international duty to play for Ulster in March and April. When I was fit I was match sharp from playing in the Six Nations, and the prizes were in sight, getting to a final and the possibility of winning a championship.
There are highs and lows in professional sport that you have to accept, but that does not mean you don’t get really disappointed. The level of fitness in modern sport has also meant that the possibility of injury has also increased, and not only in Rugby. Tennis players, footballers and golfers are now pushing their fitness levels to be able to move quicker, last longer and hit harder. The downside is that muscles that are so highly tuned can also snap more easily.
Getting to a final is fantastic, the feelings are driven by excitement, anticipation and hope. Until the match all your emotions are positive, about winning, performing and delivering on the day. That is what the Ulster players will be experiencing, and we all hope they get to the semi-final, and then they can start to think about the final.
